And I think for us as Christians, we need to stand on moral issues.”

And the way we stand against moral decline is by knowing Scripture and by doing what it says. Said Graham, “There’s a lot of evil in our country today, and that’s why it’s so important for us as Christians to stand for the Word of God and not compromise on God’s Word.”

He is correct! Many churches have caved in on moral issues. In my opinion, other churches, while they have not caved in publicly, have essentially caved in by playing “quiet mouse” on the moral issues. They have chosen to be silent in a pagan society that considers silence to be acquiescence.

It is vital that Christ-followers stand on the Word of God as properly interpreted according to grammatical-historical hermeneutical principles.[i] Genesis 1-11 is one block of Scripture that is fundamental for a Christ-follower to know and stand on because it is extremely relevant to many of the current issues that impact the evangelical Christian church today.

The church I attend (Fairview Community Church[ii] in Fairview, Tennessee) will begin a teaching on Genesis 1-11 using John MacArthur’s study guide on Genesis 1-11.[iii] On March 21, 2021, I had the privilege to preach a sermon by which I (1) extolled the virtues of every Christ-follower being a Berean (Acts 17:10-12[iv]) when it came to Bible study, and (2) identified the relevance of Genesis 1-11 to selected issues pertinent to the evangelical church.

Below are some issues Genesis 1-11 impacts.

GENESIS 1-11 IMPACTS THE CREATION-EVOLUTION DEBATE

There remains the debate between creationists and evolutionists. Genesis 1 very clearly establishes that creation is the only biblical way by which the universe, and all that is in it, was created in six literal days. A “day” is the cycle of time (i.e., 24 hours) it takes for the earth to make a complete rotation.

It is important to understand that Genesis describes the creation process in such a fashion so as to preclude the possibility of evolution. For example, the phrase “after their kind” in Genesis 1:11, 21 leaves no room for evolution:

Genesis 1:11 (NASB95) – 11 Then God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees on the earth bearing fruit after their kind with seed in them”; and it was so.

Genesis 1:21 (NASB95) – 21 God created the great sea monsters and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarmed after their kind, and every winged bird after its kind; and God saw that it was good.

The fact that on the sixth day God saw that it was “good” means the creation was complete with no room for evolution. Genesis 1:31 (NASB95) reads:

31 God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

By studying Genesis 1-11, a person will better comprehend the biblical warrant for creation that excludes evolution.

By the way, there is a great book on creation by Paul Richards entitled Creation God’s Way: Puzzled about Creation & Evolution? We go beyond “allowing” LGBTQ+ individuals in membership and leadership: We love and depend on one another without any distinction. Many of our staff and community leadership are members of the LGBTQ+ community.

The lifestyles advocated by the LGBTQ movement are sinful, and therefore, a church ought to reach out to those folks with the saving gospel of Jesus Christ. Near the end of Max Lucado’s 2004 sermon that has stirred up so much controversy[v], Max showed love and compassion toward the homosexual community:

Where does that leave the church? Contrary to the tragic decision made by our Episcopalian brethren-we must react as Christ reacts-with simultaneous compassion and conviction.

Compassion. Yes, homosexual activity angers God. But who among us has not angered God? It wasn’t homosexuality that caused Jesus to cleanse the Temple. It was self-righteousness and greed: two sins that dog all of us. Let there be no gay bashing among God’s people. No arrogant parading of signs.

There is no justification for gay jokes. Do we mock the alcoholic or shun the gossiper? Let’s show the same grace to the brother or sister who struggles with sexual sin. Is the church not a collection of saved sinners? In fact, numbered among the members of the early church were some former homosexuals.

But, it is biblical error for a church to “affirm and celebrate” that kind of lifestyle which according to 1 Corinthians 6:9-11[vi] is damning.

By studying Genesis 1-11, you will be better equipped to reach out to those in the LGBTQ community.

GENESIS 1-11 COUNTERS THE ATTACK ON THE BIBLICAL NUCLEAR FAMILY

By studying Genesis 1-2, you will better appreciate the family structure as ordained by God. God’s plan for the nuclear family is under attack by groups such as Black Lives Matter. A September 24, 2020 article (“BLM site removes page on ‘nuclear family structure’ amid NFL vet’s criticism”) in the New York Post[vii] reveals that BLM pulled some anti-nuclear family statements from their website reads:

The group, whose co-founder Patrisse Cullors has described herself and fellow co-founder Alicia Garza as “trained Marxists,” removed a page titled “What We Believe” that included its public policy positions as well as describing itself as part of the “global Black family” — a change first reported Monday by the Washington Examiner.

“We disrupt the Western-prescribed nuclear family structure requirement by supporting each other as extended families and ‘villages’ that collectively care for one another, especially our children, to the degree that mothers, parents, and children are comfortable,” the website formerly read.

The page, which was no longer available Thursday, also said BLM aimed to “dismantle the patriarchal practice” that leads to mothers having to work double shifts to make ends meet.

A December 16, 2020 article entitled Hohmann: Dem.
